The 364-day: the curve story
The 364-day is where the interesting thing in Ghana's yield curve is happening. At 10.7778% it pays about 5.8 percentage points more than the 91-day for the same credit and the same issuer — a gap far wider than a normal term premium. Against inflation of 5.3% that is a real return near 5.5 percentage points, which is a genuinely strong riskless return and the best Ghanaian savers have had in years. There are two honest readings of why the gap exists, and they point in opposite directions. One is that the market expects short rates to stay low or fall further as disinflation continues, in which case today's long rate is a yield that will not be available again for a while. The other is pure term premium: lenders want serious compensation for tying money up for twelve months in an economy that ran 54% inflation within recent memory and restructured its domestic bonds. Which reading is right decides whether locking now looks clever or costly in a year, and nobody knows. What is arithmetic rather than opinion: rolling the 91-day four times at today's rate gives about 5.02%, against 10.75% here. For rolling to win, short rates would have to rise substantially and soon.

Bank of Ghana auction results, real published rows only — no interpolated points. The path down was not smooth: the 91-day peaked near 35.7% in February 2023, fell sharply once the domestic debt exchange completed, drifted back up through the second half of 2024, then dropped through two steep falls in early 2025 and early 2026 as inflation collapsed. May 2026 is absent because those auction notices were not retrievable — we leave the gap rather than fill it.

Two explanations coexist. The market may expect short rates to keep falling, so the long bill is priced off an average of lower future short rates — locking captures a yield that soon will not exist. Or it is term premium: a year is a long commitment in an economy with a recent history of very high inflation and a domestic debt restructuring, and lenders are charging for that. The 5.8-point gap over the 91-day is unusually wide either way. We show the tradeoff and do not predict which reading wins.
